Differences in performance and application between high-voltage ceramic capacitors and Y capacitors

In electronic components, high-voltage capacitors play an important role, including high-voltage ceramic capacitors and Y capacitors. There are some differences in performance and application.
High-voltage ceramic capacitor is a disc capacitor with ceramic material as the dielectric. Generally speaking, high-voltage ceramic capacitors can be divided into different categories according to different operating voltages, including low voltage, medium high voltage, high voltage and ultra-high voltage. This kind of capacitor has the characteristics of wear-resistant DC high voltage in DC circuits, and is suitable for high voltage bypass and coupling circuits, especially in television receivers and scanning circuits.
Y capacitor is also a type of high-voltage ceramic capacitor, but it has special safety performance requirements. Y capacitors belong to the safety capacitor series and must be certified by safety testing agencies. These capacitors usually have the appearance of blue discs and are marked with safety certification marks, such as UL, VDE, ENEC, etc., as well as the mark of withstand voltage AC400V or AC300V. The application fields of Y capacitors include connecting between two lines of power lines and the ground to suppress common mode interference. They are generally used in pairs.

It should be noted that there are some differences in performance and application between Y capacitors and high-voltage ceramic capacitors. High-voltage ceramic capacitors are mainly used in DC circuits, while Y capacitors are mainly used in AC circuits. Although their capacity and withstand voltage may be the same, ordinary capacitors cannot be substituted for Y capacitors at will, because Y capacitors are specially designed for safety performance. However, when the capacity and withstand voltage are the same, Y capacitors can replace high-voltage ceramic capacitors and have better safety performance.
To sum up, there are obvious differences in performance and application between high-voltage ceramic capacitors and Y capacitors. The correct selection and use of them is crucial for circuit design, especially when considering safety performance and circuit type.
