Multi-layer varistors are One-Pair Ethernet Alliance qualified for automotive use

Kyocera avx Low Capacitance MLVs

Available in 0402 and 0603 (0.5 ±0.1mm and 0.80 ±0.15mm respectively), they are rated for working voltages between 18 and 70Vdc, capacitance from 1.5 to 4.7pF, transients from 0.02 to 0.04J, peaks of 1 to 3A and operation across -55°C to +150°C.

Actual working voltage options are: 18, 24, 30, 60, or 70Vdc – equating to 14, 17, 21, 42 or 52Vac). Corresponding 1mA breakdown voltages span 90 to 210V, with 1A clamping between 190 and 375V. depending on part.

“The series also delivers up to 25kV of ESD protection per IEC 61000-4-2, and meets 48Vdc jump start requirements.

In the 0402 package, two devices are qualified to the Open (One-Pair Ethernet) Alliance standard:

  • VCAS04AP701R5YAT is rated for 70Vdc and 1.55pF (±0.13pF) for 1000BASE-T1 (Gbit) Ethernet
  • VCAS04AP704R7LAT is rated for 70Vdc and 4.7pF (±1pF) for 100BASE-T1 (100Mbit/s) automotive Ethernet

“As a member of the Open Alliance special interest group dedicated to encouraging the standardisation and adoption of single-pair automotive Ethernet, we are excited to expand our portfolio of AEC-Q200-qualified components to support Ethernet-based automotive applications,” said Kyocera field application engineer John Gallipeau.”

Terminations are RoHS-compliant nickel, and the parts come in 7inch (4,000 piece) or 13inch (10,000 piece) reels.

MLVs can provide bi-directional over-voltage protection, sub-ns response times, multi-strike capability and EMI/RFI attenuation in their ‘off’ state – the latter sometimes replacing additional EMC capacitors.

As well as automotive Ethernet networks, use is foreseen in industrial automation, robotics, RF circuits (antennas, radar, Bluetooth), optical circuits, with sensors and on other high-speed data lines.
